Oregon, Columbia Gorge
The high country of Northern Oregon feeds the lower reaches of the Columbia River with a number of beautiful waterfalls. Some can be seen from the Interstate and some reward the hiker with a more private viewing. In October, just at the end of the Fall colors, I hiked two of the trails with my medium format camera and Rollei infrared film.
Each of these locations required an 800' climb up the Columbia Gorge cliffs. The hiking trails are good and the other hikers all seemed to be really enjoying the occasion, as well. I camped overnights at Ainsworth St. Park. If you camp there, try to get as far uphill as possible - the freight trains run all night just below the campground. On the other hand, the Park staff are friendly and the hot showers are FREE.
