Romantic Sculptures of Henry Clews, Jr.
The Chateau La Napoule sits on the water's edge just West of Cannes and is home to remarkable work by the expatriot American sculptor, Henry Clews. In the 1920's and 30's Mr. Clews decorated the existing stone work of La Napoule with his mystic interpretations of the male-female dynamics of lust and love. Staying there for a week in 1995 I had an opportunity to photograph capitals of columns and a beautiful carved door in the dining room. I printed these all in B&W and then hand-colored them in my own reaction to his unique style.
The colored prints were followed (by great luck) by stumbling upon an altar-like wood piece in a yard sale in Corrales, New Mexico. This led to constructing three shrines to love. I rephotographed the shrines and had a lab in Denver make archival quality 16x20 prints for framing. I showed some of these at a now-defunct gallery in Albuquerque and later as a Valentine's Day feature at Artworks Gallery in Greenbank, Washington.
